Here are Vonnegut’s eight rules for writing a short story:
- Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.
- Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.
- Every character should want something, even if…
You know, I really like these rules.
I hated Slaughterhouse Five, but I like these rules.

It’s 12:53 am on Sunday October…what is it…oh yeah, the 9th.
I’ve had one of the worst weekends ever and it’s not even over yet.
I just wanna be like “hay, life, it’s time to like…stop doing these things that make me sad. I’d just appreciate it. ‘Cause we could be friends, if you’d like, stop hitting me. Deal? K? <3?”
